Gliders India Limited (GIL), a public sector Indian company based in Kanpur, has secured a landmark contract that will significantly advance the country's defense capabilities. GIL has received a major order to manufacture 905  Sukhoi-30 brake parachute systems for the Indian Air Force's frontline Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter aircraft. This first-of-its-kind major contract is worth ?65 crore and ensures that the critical component will be produced domestically at the Ordnance Parachute Factory (OPF) in Kanpur.

This manufacturing commitment is a major step towards India's true self-reliance in defense procurement. For years, India has relied on foreign suppliers, particularly Russia, for these sophisticated brake parachute systems. By producing them indigenously, GIL is directly supporting the government's ambitious 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' and 'Make in India Defense' initiatives. This successful domestic production line ensures a reliable supply chain, mitigates strategic vulnerabilities, and conserves valuable foreign exchange.

The Sukhoi-30 brake parachute is an essential safety component. Its primary function is to deploy upon landing to dramatically reduce the aircraft's speed, which is crucial for safe and efficient operations, especially on short runways or during high-speed emergency descents. Locally manufactured systems are designed to safely assist jets in landing at speeds up to 300 kilometers per hour. With its technical textile expertise, the Ordnance Parachute Factory (OPF) is well-equipped for this task, having previously manufactured similar parachutes for aircraft such as the MiG-21. Each unit is made of durable nylon fabric, weighs approximately 23 kilograms, and is designed to last for 10 years.
